Vienna Yearbook of Population Research

The Vienna Yearbook of Population Research (VYPR) is an open-access journal that features contributions addressing population trends as well as a broad range of theoretical and methodological issues in population research. Besides Research articles and Review articles, the journal welcomes submissions of Data & Trends contributions, peer-reviewed analytical or descriptive articles that focus primarily on empirical analyses or present databases and data infrastructures, and Perspectives, peer-reviewed short contributions and essays focusing on ideas, concepts or theories, either discussing existing research or proposing new frameworks and interpretations. The journal also publishes Debates – invited short contributions and reflections on selected questions and issues.

The journal has been published since 2003 by Austrian Academy of Sciences Press and is hosted by the Vienna Institute of Demography of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. While based in Austria, it aims to give a global coverage of population issues and attract high-quality contributions from authors from different regions and backgrounds. The journal is coordinated by Editor and Managing Editor jointly with issue guest editors, who are chiefly responsible for individual volumes. Their activity is overseen by international Editorial Board.

Articles are published online on a rolling basis. Printed copies are published annually in full colour, usually towards the end of the calendar year.

Since 2008, the volumes have been devoted to selected themes following special calls for thematic issues. The latest issue focusses on The Causes and Consequences of Depopulation (2023, Volume 21), while the current volume covers Population and Climate Change (2024, Volume 22). The upcoming issue will focus on Population Inequality Matters (2025, Volume 23).
